Attire can be done with everyone attending your Cinco de Mayo backyard barbecue party, wearing traditional Mexican attire. Brightly colored dresses on women and girls will help keep the air of festivities alive during your party. The men can come as vaqueros (cowboys) or wear T-shirts in red green or white. Even if the men choose not to dress up, the ladies in their beautiful dresses will still lift the spirits of the occasion.

Competitions and games make for the best in guest participation. Ask each guest who wishes to do so to bring their own home made salsa to the party. For those with no culinary skills a couple bags of chips. Then hold a taste testing and award a winner for their superior salsa. This can be done with traditional Mexican deserts as well.

Games are also a great way to get people involved and socializing. Theme specific games can include a piñata. Your piñata can include whatever small gifts or candy you wish to place in it. This is fun for people of all ages, not just the children. Get some good Mexican music playing and get everyone up and participating.

To keep your Cinco De Mayo backyard barbecue true to its theme stick with Mexican style foods such as steaks with a Mexican marinade, hamburgers with guacamole topping, beverages such as margaritas, Mexican beer, and watermelon punch for children... Make sure to have a bowl of salsa and a bowl of chips on each table. To get a broad flare of food without doing all the work, you can ask your guests to each bring their favorite Mexican side dish to share.
